Greeting, you have been hired to test the lead content of a drinking 2 water samples of Flint Michigan. The water samples are known to contain lead ions. The question is how much? This is a quantitative question meaning we are looking for a numerical value.
There are only two ways to remove a substance after it is dissolved.
1. Remove solvent via evaporation. This will remove lead but will also leave many impurities behind.
2. Chemically convert the soluble substance into an insoluble substance. Then collect the insoluble substance via filtration. This is what is referred to as gravimetric analysis. And this is our task.
Lab summery:
1. Watch pre-lab video.
2. Watch video on how to do suction filtration.
3. We will be converting soluble lead ions to an insoluble form using sodium Chloride solution. The product is a very insoluble lead (II) chloride.
4. We will then be filtering and letting our filter dry after which we will weigh that filter.
Finally calculate the mass of just Pb in the remaining PbCl2.
