Practical English
Practical English is a class that is taught to individuals and small groups. It focuses on reading and writing skills. Units include short stories, plays, nonfiction, poetry, and novels. Students learn to connect to, think about, and write about what they read.
Units of study:
Short Stories- Students learn the elements of short stories such as characters, setting, plot, irony, and themes. They then apply this information to understand and analzye short stories such as "The Lottery" and "The Lady and the Tiger". Finally, students write compare and contrast 5 paragraph essays.
Romeo and Juliet- Students learn how to read drama and become familiar with William Shakespeare. They show comprehension of drama by rewriting the most famous scene from Romeo and Juliet in another setting and also compare different versions of this great love story.
Poetry- Students learn various literary devices that are used in poetry such as similies, metaphors, alliteration, and personification. They both read famous poetry and write their own.
NonFiction Reading- Students read various articles varying from short essays, biographies, and magazines to help them better understand nonfiction text. Students learn to identify the purpose of the article and what bias the author may have. They also learn to make inferences about the nonfiction work.
Prejudice and Diversity- Students read the novel Speak as well as culturally diverse folktales and stories in this unit to explore prejudice and culture.
