The Hortonville Area School District is dedicated to providing literacy instruction that supports all learners. We assess students throughout the school year to monitor student learning and provide additional support when needed.
All students in grades K-12 receive universal instruction in reading, writing and language (may include phonics, vocabulary, grammar and spelling instruction).
When assessments indicate a student requires additional support, classroom teachers provide targeted small-group lessons in addition to the universal instruction. These supports typically address the current grade's learning targets and standards.
Students with the greatest need may also be identified to receive further support with a specially trained interventionist in addition to the small group classroom support and universal instruction. Teams of interventionists analyze assessment data to determine the type of intervention for each child. Most interventions are administered in small groups.
The interventions might address comprehensive reading, writing and phonics/spelling goals. Other intervention methods may focus on one specific area of literacy (phonics OR reading fluency OR spelling OR comprehension, etc). At the high school level, students who are identified as needing additional support in the area of literacy may be scheduled into a co-taught English course and/or may have an opportunity to enroll in an intervention course that is taught in conjunction with the required English course for additional elective credit.
